AFTER a seven-day hike starting in Malaga, walkers taking part in a march to remember the victims of what is considered one of the worst atrocities in Spain’s Civil War crossed the border from Granada into Murcia today Wednesday.

The Marcha Malaga Almeria #Desbanda2020’ hike is a homage to those who died in the road massacre of 1937.

On February 8 of that year an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 civilians attempted to escape Republican-dominated Malaga when it was besieged by Nationalist forces and their fascist supporters. They headed on foot for Almeria along the N-340 coast road, but were attacked by air and land, and thousands were killed.

More than 100 Desbanda walking club walkers are doing the entire march, and dozens of others have joined them along the way.

They expect to reach Almeria city on Saturday, accompanied by hundreds for the final stage.
